The Socialist Party (PS) has publicly criticized the PSD/CDS coalition governing Santa Maria Maior for alleged disorganization and lack of rigor, sparking significant political controversy.

The political climate in Santa Maria Maior, a well-known parish in Madeira, has recently become turbulent following accusations from the Socialist Party (PS) directed at the governing PSD/CDS coalition. The PS claims that the current administration is plagued by a "glaring lack of rigor, disorganization, and amateurism." These allegations have intensified public debate and scrutiny of the local government's operations.

The controversy centers around a recent meeting of the Assembly of Santa Maria Maior, where key financial discussions were expected to take place. The agenda included the approval of the 2025 Financial Report and the first budget amendment for 2026. However, the PS has accused the administration of sending necessary documents late and presenting inconsistent figures during the meeting.

In response to these issues, the executive failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, which led to a chaotic assembly session. The president of the junta decided to suspend the meeting, scheduling an extraordinary session to address the unresolved financial discussions. This incident has raised concerns about the administration's preparedness and capability to effectively govern.

PS representatives have voiced strong dissatisfaction, highlighting that the executive lacks the necessary competence and formality expected from a governing body. They have criticized the leadership's approach, suggesting that the current management is treating the Junta de Freguesia as if it were a less formal institution, such as a "Casa do Povo" (community center), rather than a formal government entity.

Additionally, the PS has pointed out other procedural irregularities, including the improper handling of the minutes from a previous meeting on December 30. Allegedly, the minutes were not distributed beforehand, yet a vote was conducted to approve them without proper review. This has further fueled the PS's claims of mismanagement and lack of transparency within the governing coalition.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming extraordinary meeting will be crucial for both parties. It will test the coalition's ability to address the criticisms and implement changes that restore confidence among the parish's residents and stakeholders. For the PS, it represents an opportunity to hold the governing body accountable and push for more rigorous and transparent governance practices.
