The island of Madeira has come together to mourn the loss of three respected women: Maria de Sousa de Jesus Câmara, Maria Ascensão de Abreu, and Maria Judite de Aguiar. Each of these women, known affectionately in their local communities, passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy of love and community spirit.

Maria de Sousa de Jesus Câmara

Maria de Sousa de Jesus Câmara, a longtime resident of Achada do Pau Bastião in the parish of São Roque do Faial, passed away on May 21, 2026. Her funeral will take place at the Church of São Roque do Faial, with a mass at 3 PM, followed by burial at the local municipal cemetery. Her family expressed gratitude for the support received from neighbors, caregivers, and medical staff during her final days.

Maria AscensĂŁo de Abreu

On May 20, 2026, Maria Ascensão de Abreu, from Caminho do Ribeiro Real in Câmara de Lobos, passed away. Her funeral service is scheduled for May 21, starting at the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça and proceeding to the cemetery chapel in Câmara de Lobos. The family has invited friends and relatives to a mass on May 24, at the Santa Cecília Church, to commemorate her life.

Maria Judite de Aguiar

The community of Quinta Grande mourns the passing of Maria Judite de Aguiar, who died on May 19, 2026. Her funeral was held on May 20, with services conducted at the Vera Cruz chapel in Quinta Grande. A memorial mass will be held on May 24 at the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, where family and friends are invited to pay their respects.

These losses have deeply affected their respective communities, highlighting the bonds of friendship and family that define the spirit of Madeira. The island continues to support each other through these difficult times, honoring the legacy of these remarkable women.
