Four beloved residents of Madeira Island have passed away, leaving a profound impact on their families and communities. Their lives will be honored through memorial services and shared memories.

Madeira Island is in mourning following the recent passing of four esteemed community members: Maria Freitas de Ponte, Maria Marlene Correia de Freitas, Jorge Armindo da Luz, and Manuel Estêvão Fernandes. Their deaths, each occurring within the first week of March 2026, have deeply affected their families, friends, and the broader community.

Maria Freitas de Ponte, a cherished resident of Calheta, will be remembered for her kindness and contributions to her community. Her funeral will take place on March 8th, 2026, beginning at the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça and proceeding to the parish church of São Francisco Xavier, Calheta. A mass will be held at 12:30 PM, followed by her burial at Lombo do Salão cemetery.

In Santa Cruz, Maria Marlene Correia de Freitas's family has announced her funeral arrangements. As a respected figure in her locality, her funeral will be held at the Church of Santa Cruz on March 8th, 2026. A mass will commence at 11:00 AM, and attendees can join the family in mourning and remembrance.

Jorge Armindo da Luz, whose life was centered in Funchal, passed away on March 7th, 2026. His funeral mass is scheduled for March 8th at the cemetery chapel of Nossa Senhora das Angústias, São Martinho, with cremation to follow. Jorge's family has expressed gratitude towards the medical staff who cared for him during his illness.

Manuel Estêvão Fernandes, from the serene village of Curral das Freiras, is fondly remembered by his family and neighbors. His funeral procession will take place on March 7th, 2026, starting from Hospital Dr. João Almada and moving to the parish church of Nossa Senhora do Livramento. The service will begin at 3:30 PM, with transportation provided for attendees from surrounding areas.
