The PS-Madeira has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced public transport services in Madeira's rural areas and municipalities. Residents face challenges due to limited transport options, impacting mobility and access to services.

On April 10, 2026, the PS-Madeira, led by President Célia Pessegueiro, emphasized the pressing need for improved public transport services in the rural areas of Madeira. During a press conference in Estrela da Calheta, Pessegueiro addressed the growing concerns from residents in Calheta and other municipalities such as Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, and the northern coast, who struggle with inadequate public transportation options.

The lack of frequent and accessible public transport has been a long-standing issue affecting the daily lives of many residents. With rising fuel costs and limited parking spaces, the need for reliable public transport becomes even more critical. Pessegueiro pointed out that smaller vehicles are necessary to navigate the narrower roads where larger buses cannot venture, thus providing a much-needed solution for these communities.

The issue also ties into the broader agreement for the SIGA network's implementation, where municipalities ceded responsibility to the Regional Government with the expectation of enhanced intermunicipal and local transport services. Unfortunately, these improvements have not yet materialized, leaving many areas underserved.

Pessegueiro's call to action is not just for Calheta but for all rural municipalities in Madeira that suffer from similar issues. Her statement highlights a crucial need for policy changes to ensure all residents have adequate access to public transport, thereby improving their quality of life and accessibility to essential services.
