Câmara de Lobos Leads Reforestation and Cat Control Initiatives
Madeira GuideIn a bid to enhance the natural landscape and manage local wildlife, Câmara de Lobos launches reforestation and pioneering cat control programs.
Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque town on Madeira Island, has announced two significant community initiatives aimed at environmental sustainability and animal welfare. These initiatives include a reforestation project at the Câmara de Lobos Business Park and a pioneering cat control program.
Reforestation Efforts at Business Park
On March 26, the Câmara Municipal of Câmara de Lobos, in collaboration with Madeira Parques Empresariais and supported by the Instituto de Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN), will host a reforestation event at the Business Park located in Garachico. This initiative is part of the celebrations for World Tree Day and the International Day of Forests, both observed on March 21.
The reforestation project aims to enhance the local ecosystem by planting a variety of native tree species, which not only beautify the area but also help combat climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide. This effort reflects the town's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
Innovative Cat Control Program
In a groundbreaking move, the Câmara Municipal of Câmara de Lobos, in partnership with the Associação Animais de Rua, will implement a Capture-Neuter-Return (CNR) program. This initiative, scheduled for March 27 and 28, is designed to manage the population of feral cats effectively.
The program will target approximately 100 cats across various colonies identified throughout the municipality. By humanely reducing the number of feral cats, the initiative aims to address public health concerns and improve the well-being of these animals, setting a precedent for other regions in Madeira.
Câmara de Lobos continues to be a leader in environmental and community welfare programs, demonstrating a commitment to the well-being of its residents and natural surroundings. These initiatives not only enhance the beauty and ecological balance of the area but also promote responsible animal management practices.
