Following a significant landslide in Curral das Freiras, authorities in Câmara de Lobos have initiated continuous monitoring to ensure public safety. The incident, occurring on March 27, 2026, has prompted local officials to take precautionary measures, including evacuating nearby residents as a safety measure.

In the wake of a considerable landslide in the Curral das Freiras area of Madeira Island, local authorities have intensified their efforts to monitor and manage the situation. The landslide occurred on March 27, 2026, in the Seara Velha area, depositing debris into the Ribeira dos Socorridos stream, which could potentially obstruct water flow and pose additional risks.

The municipal government of Câmara de Lobos, under the leadership of Mayor Celso Bettencourt, has activated the Municipal Civil Protection Service's monitoring protocols. This involves continuous surveillance of the affected area to prevent any disruption to water flow and ensure the safety of local residents and infrastructure.

According to the Volunteer Fire Department of Câmara de Lobos, there are no reports of injuries related to the landslide. However, as a precautionary measure, a family residing near the affected area has been advised to relocate temporarily. Their home, although currently stable, is being monitored closely for any signs of instability.

The local government is working closely with various regional bodies, including the Directorate for Social Equipment and Conservation, the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory, and the Regional Civil Protection Service, to provide technical support and ensure the area is safe. Continuous technical evaluations are being carried out to assess the stability of the slope and the evolution of the waterline.

Mayor Bettencourt emphasized that while there is no immediate cause for alarm, all necessary precautions are being implemented to ensure public safety. The ongoing efforts aim to maintain uninterrupted water flow in the Ribeira dos Socorridos and prevent any further risks associated with the landslide.
