Câmara de Lobos launches a dual initiative focusing on reforestation and animal welfare, aiming to enhance local biodiversity and community well-being.

Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque town on Madeira Island, is taking significant steps towards environmental conservation and community welfare. This week, the local government has initiated two key projects: a reforestation activity in the Câmara de Lobos Business Park and a pioneering program to control feral cat colonies.

Reforestation Efforts

On March 26, at 10:30 AM, the Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos, in collaboration with Madeira Parques Empresariais, will conduct a reforestation campaign at the Câmara de Lobos Business Park, situated in the Garachico area. This initiative, supported by the Instituto de Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN), marks the celebration of World Tree Day and International Day of Forests, both observed on March 21.

The reforestation project aims to enhance the local ecosystem by planting a variety of native tree species. This effort not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also enriches the scenic beauty of the area, benefiting both residents and tourists.

Pioneering Animal Welfare Initiative

In a separate but equally important initiative, Câmara de Lobos is addressing the welfare of its feral cat population. Partnering with the Associação Animais de Rua, the municipality is implementing a Capture-Neuter-Return (CNR) program. This effort is described as a pioneering project due to its scale and organization within the region.

Scheduled for March 27 and 28, the program aims to manage approximately 100 cats across various colonies identified in all parishes of the municipality. This humane approach not only controls the feral cat population but also improves the health and quality of life for these animals.

These dual initiatives reflect Câmara de Lobos' commitment to environmental stewardship and community service, enhancing the quality of life for its residents and preserving the natural beauty that attracts visitors from around the world.
