The Juventude Popular of Madeira stands against the €500 fee for doctoral thesis submission at the University of Madeira, citing it as excessive in the current economic climate.

The Juventude Popular (JP) of Madeira, the youth wing of the CDS-PP party, has voiced strong opposition to the newly implemented €500 fee for doctoral thesis submissions at the University of Madeira. This charge, which is demanded at the moment of thesis delivery, has sparked significant controversy among students and political groups alike.

On February 19, representatives from JP met with the Academic Association of the University of Madeira to discuss what they termed an 'unacceptable' financial burden on students. The fee, which must be paid in a single installment, is considered by JP to be disproportionately high, especially for students who are simultaneously managing professional careers and family responsibilities.

The JP argues that such a financial demand is not only excessive but also creates an additional barrier to academic achievement at a time when many students are already grappling with the costs of living and education. This sentiment echoes throughout the student community, where the burden of additional fees is felt acutely.

In light of these concerns, JP is calling for greater transparency in the university's fee structure and a reassessment of the doctoral exam fee to make higher education more accessible and affordable for all students. They stress the importance of ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder academic progress, particularly in a region like Madeira, where economic conditions can already be challenging.

The issue has gained traction not only in academic circles but also among local politicians and the general public, who view education as a crucial component of regional development. There is a growing call for the university to provide a detailed justification for the fee and to consider alternative funding models that could alleviate the financial pressure on students.
