Funchal, the capital city of Madeira Island, witnessed a series of distressing incidents that have left the community in shock. The events unfolded over a span of less than 24 hours, involving two fatalities due to cardiac arrests and two separate assault cases.

Two Fatal Cardiac Arrests

In the early hours of January 11, 2026, the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters were dispatched to a location in Funchal to respond to a cardiac arrest emergency involving a 64-year-old man. Despite their swift arrival, the man's life could not be saved. This tragic incident was preceded by another cardiac arrest on the evening of January 10, involving a 72-year-old man in Boa Nova, who also unfortunately passed away.

Assaults Raise Safety Concerns

In separate incidents, a tourist and a local woman were victims of assaults in Funchal. Around 3:30 AM on January 11, a tourist in his 40s was attacked and robbed in the city. The incident left him with facial injuries, necessitating medical attention at the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.

Earlier, at approximately 3 PM on January 10, a 62-year-old woman was assaulted at a local amusement park near the circus. She suffered a head injury and was also treated at the same hospital.

These incidents have sparked concerns among both residents and tourists about the safety of public spaces in Funchal. The local authorities have been urged to enhance security measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
