Tragic Events Unfold in Ribeira Brava: Fire, Accident, and Cardiac Arrest

A series of unfortunate incidents hit Ribeira Brava, Madeira, as a wildfire, a car accident, and a cardiac arrest occurred in quick succession, involving local emergency services.

In a challenging week for the community of Ribeira Brava, Madeira, local emergency services were kept on their toes by a series of distressing events. On January 26, 2026, a wildfire broke out in the site of Apresentação, requiring immediate intervention by the Bombeiros Voluntários da Ribeira Brava e Ponta do Sol.

The fire, which ignited in the late afternoon, demanded a two-hour fight from seven firefighters utilizing both heavy and light vehicles. Fortunately, they managed to control the flames, preventing any further damage to the surrounding area.

Just days before, on January 24, a traffic incident occurred on the regional road near Canhas, leading to emergency services being deployed once again. A man in his 30s lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a parked car. Although initially unconscious, he regained consciousness by the time help arrived and was subsequently taken to Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça with facial injuries.

Adding to the week's calamities, on January 23, a 70-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest in the town of Ribeira Brava. Despite the rapid response from EMIR and the local firefighters, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the man sadly passed away.

These events highlight the tireless efforts of the emergency services in Ribeira Brava, who have been pivotal in responding to various crises, ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors alike.
