In recent days, a series of traffic incidents have taken place on the main highway of Madeira Island, causing significant disruption to both locals and tourists. The highway, which is a vital route connecting various parts of the island, has seen two accidents and a vehicle fire within a span of three days.
On December 23, an accident occurred on the highway in the Funchal area, specifically in the São Martinho region, on the road heading towards Câmara de Lobos. This incident was the first in a series of disruptions on this crucial route.
The following day, on December 24, a car caught fire beneath the runway of Madeira Airport, on the segment of the highway leading from Machico to Funchal. The Santa Cruz Fire Brigade quickly responded to the scene to extinguish the flames and ensure the safety of the motorists.
Most recently, on December 25, another accident took place near the first exit for Santa Cruz, also on the Machico-Funchal direction. The Public Security Police (PSP) and Vialitoral, the local road management company, were dispatched to manage the aftermath and clear the roadway.
