Madeira Island has recently witnessed a series of unfortunate accidents, highlighting the importance of adhering to safety protocols in various activities. These events, occurring over two days, involved a lawn mowing incident, a fall from a height, and a traffic accident.
Lawn Mowing Accident
On January 20, 2026, a man aged between 30 and 40 from the Lugar da Serra area in Tabua suffered a severe injury while mowing his lawn. He accidentally slipped, causing his foot to get caught under the machine, resulting in the loss of three toes. Emergency services from the Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol were promptly dispatched, transporting the injured man to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for treatment.
Fall from a Height
On the same day, at around 7:40 PM, another accident occurred at Largo da Fonte in Monte. A 63-year-old man, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, fell approximately 20 meters into a stream. He was rescued by nearby residents with serious head injuries and other wounds. The injured man was also taken to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Traffic Collision
Earlier, on January 19, a minor traffic accident occurred near the fire station in Ribeira Brava. The incident involved a rear-end collision between two vehicles at a pedestrian crosswalk. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were minor, and the victim was treated at the Ribeira Brava Health Center.
