The historic Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vida in Madeira faces potential relocation due to multiple landslides threatening its stability. Regional authorities are considering moving the chapel to preserve this cultural landmark.

The historic Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vida, located in Fajã do Mar, Madeira, is facing a critical threat due to recent landslides. Over the past three weeks, the area has experienced three significant landslides, putting the structural integrity of the chapel at risk.

In response to this escalating threat, the Regional Secretariat for Equipment and Infrastructure has announced the possibility of relocating the chapel to a safer part of Fajã do Mar. This decision is being made in collaboration with local government to ensure the preservation of this cultural and religious landmark.

The party Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) has criticized the regional authorities for their delayed response to the crisis. They argue that the chapel is a vital part of Madeira's collective memory and its loss would be a significant cultural blow to the community.

The chapel, a cherished site for both locals and tourists, holds significant historical value. Its potential relocation is seen as a necessary step to prevent its destruction from the ongoing geological instability.

"A government that neglects collective memory tends to be insensitive in all aspects," said Basílio Santos, a representative from JPP.

Local authorities are currently conducting studies to identify suitable land for the chapel's reconstruction, aiming to maintain its accessibility and historical context.
