Madeira GuideThe Mega King Cake celebration returned to Câmara de Lobos, marking its tenth edition, as part of the festive season's events, highlighting its cultural significance in Madeira.
The cherished tradition of the Mega King Cake returned to Câmara de Lobos this Sunday, marking its tenth edition. This event, organized by the Câmara Municipal, took place at the Mercado Municipal de Câmara de Lobos. The official presentation commenced at 11:00 AM, followed by the cutting and distribution of the cake to all attendees.
This annual event is part of the Christmas and New Year’s festivities orchestrated by the local authorities in collaboration with local businesses. The aim is to celebrate the Epiphany, known locally as Dia de Reis, while simultaneously boosting the economic activity in the lower town area.
Since its inception in 2013, the Mega King Cake event has consistently drawn numerous visitors to the Praça da Autonomia. However, due to adverse weather conditions this year, the celebration was moved to the Mercado Municipal.
The King Cake, or Bolo Rei, remains a central figure in Madeira’s traditions, serving not only as a religious and cultural symbol but also as a community and promotional event. It exemplifies the island's rich cultural heritage, where food and community gatherings are integral parts of festive celebrations.
The Bolo Rei, also known as Bolo dos Reis or King Cake, is a traditional holiday cake in Portugal, particularly prominent in Madeira. Shaped like a crown, this round cake with a large hole in the center is made from a soft white dough enriched with nuts and candied fruits.
