The Port Authority of Funchal has extended the strong maritime agitation warning until January 7, affecting both north and south coasts with significant wave activity.

The Port Authority of Funchal has announced an extension of the strong maritime agitation warning, initially set to expire earlier, now prolonged until 6 a.m. on January 7. This decision comes in response to continued adverse weather conditions affecting the coastal regions of Madeira.

Forecasts indicate that the northeastern winds will remain fresh to very fresh, with speeds ranging from 31 to 50 km/h, gradually decreasing to moderate to fresh (20 to 39 km/h) by the end of the warning period. Visibility, however, is expected to remain good.

Wave activity is a significant concern, particularly on the north coast where waves from the northeast are anticipated to reach heights of 3.5 to 4 meters, reducing to 2 to 3 meters as the period progresses. Meanwhile, the south coast will experience southern waves ranging from 1 to 2 meters.

For residents and tourists in Madeira, this warning serves as a crucial reminder to exercise caution, especially in coastal and marine areas. The island, known for its rugged coastline and vibrant marine activities, often experiences such weather patterns, particularly in the winter months.

Local authorities advise avoiding unnecessary travel by sea and urge all maritime operators and individuals to stay informed about the latest updates to ensure safety and mitigate any potential risks associated with the strong sea conditions.
