The Porto do Funchal authorities have issued a warning about strong maritime agitation and wind conditions affecting Madeira until Friday evening, urging safety precautions.

The Capitania do Porto do Funchal has issued a warning for strong maritime and wind conditions affecting the Madeira archipelago. This alert remains in effect until 18:00 on Friday, as stated by the local maritime authorities. The warning, based on forecasts from the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), foresees significant wave heights and strong winds.

According to the advisory, wave heights on the northern coast of Madeira could reach up to four meters, while the southern coast may experience waves not exceeding three meters. The wind is expected to blow from the west/northwest at 20 to 30 km/h, intensifying to 40 to 50 km/h from Friday morning.

Visibility is predicted to be generally good to moderate, but could become temporarily poor during the night. Residents and tourists are advised to exercise caution, particularly in coastal areas.

Safety Recommendations

The Capitania urges the maritime community and the general population to take necessary precautions. This includes reinforcing the mooring of vessels and maintaining close watch over anchored boats. It is also recommended to avoid walking near the ocean or in exposed areas such as harbor breakwaters, cliffs, or beaches, where unexpected waves could pose a danger.

  • Secure all vessels and monitor those anchored.
  • Avoid coastal walks or exposed areas.
  • Refrain from recreational fishing, especially near cliffs.

The authorities emphasize that these conditions could make the ocean appear deceptively safe, urging everyone to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary risks.
