Recent weeks have seen a worrying increase in drunk driving incidents on Madeira's roads, with authorities reporting numerous cases.

In the picturesque island of Madeira, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, a concerning trend has emerged on its roads. Recent data reveals a significant rise in drunk driving incidents, prompting local authorities to intensify their monitoring efforts.

The Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), responsible for maintaining road safety, has reported a troubling number of cases in the weeks leading up to the busy festive season. Between December 12th and 18th, 2025, there were 13 recorded incidents of driving under the influence. This is a noticeable decrease from the previous week, December 5th to 11th, where 20 such incidents were registered.

These statistics are particularly alarming as they coincide with the festive period, a time when both locals and tourists flock to Madeira to enjoy its celebrations. The PSP's regular road checks are part of a broader effort to curb this dangerous behavior and ensure the safety of all road users.

Driving under the influence not only poses significant risks to the driver but also to pedestrians and other vehicles. The increase in cases has led to calls for more stringent enforcement and public awareness campaigns to highlight the dangers of drunk driving.

Madeira, while a popular tourist destination, also prides itself on being a safe and welcoming place for visitors. The local government and law enforcement are committed to maintaining this image by addressing issues such as drunk driving head-on.
