The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued orange and yellow weather alerts for Madeira due to forecasts of strong winds and rough seas from January 2 to January 4, 2026.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a series of weather warnings for the Madeira archipelago, forecasting significant maritime agitation, strong winds, and precipitation. These weather conditions are expected to affect the region from Friday, January 2, to Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Specifically, on the north coast of Madeira, an orange alert is in place for maritime agitation from 3 PM on Friday to 12 PM on Saturday, with northwest waves expected to reach 5 to 6 meters in significant height, potentially peaking at 11 meters. Before and after this period, yellow alerts remain for maritime agitation, with waves measuring between 4 and 5 meters.

In addition to the IPMA warnings, the Port Authority of Funchal has been notified of a signal 7 weather alert, indicating severe conditions. The authority has updated warnings for very strong winds, strong maritime agitation, and poor visibility, effective until 6 AM on Saturday, January 3.

Wind conditions are expected to range from a fresh breeze at 31 to 39 km/h, increasing to a very fresh breeze at 40 to 50 km/h, and at times reaching strong levels of 51 to 60 km/h. Gusts could further increase to very strong at times, potentially reaching 62 km/h.

Residents and tourists in Madeira are advised to exercise caution, particularly near coastal areas. The local authorities urge everyone to stay informed about the weather conditions and to avoid unnecessary travel during the warning periods.

Madeira, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, often attracts tourists seeking its natural beauty. However, during this period of severe weather, it is important for visitors to prioritize safety and heed local advisories.
