The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere has issued warnings for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and maritime agitation on Madeira Island, with snow expected in mountainous areas.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued several weather warnings for Madeira Island, affecting both residents and tourists. These warnings include forecasts of heavy rain, thunderstorms, maritime agitation, and snowfall in the mountainous regions.

The North Coast of Madeira is expected to experience significant maritime agitation, with waves ranging from 5 to 6 meters, potentially reaching up to 10 meters. This has prompted an orange alert to be issued, effective from midnight to 9 AM on Thursday, March 19. The rough sea conditions may pose risks to marine activities and coastal areas.

Additionally, heavy downpours and thunderstorms are anticipated from the evening of March 17 through the morning of March 18. Waves of 4 to 5 meters are also expected from the afternoon of March 18 through midnight on March 19, leading to a yellow warning for these conditions.

In the mountainous regions of Madeira, snowfall is projected to occur above 1,500 meters of altitude, with accumulations potentially reaching up to 10 centimeters. An ongoing yellow warning is in place for these areas from 9 AM on March 18 to 9 AM on March 19. This snowfall could disrupt local travel and activities, and residents are advised to exercise caution.

These weather conditions are part of a broader pattern of unsettled weather impacting the region. Visitors and locals are encouraged to stay informed and heed official advisories to ensure safety.
