The Health Service of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (SESARAM) has been awarded a plaque of recognition for its active participation in the 'STOP Hospital Infection 2.0' project. The ceremony took place on February 19, 2026, in Porto, marking the completion of the project's second phase and its transition to sustainability.
The initiative seeks to significantly reduce the incidence of healthcare-associated infections, targeting a 50% reduction in four critical types of hospital infections. This nationwide effort involves 22 institutions and 39 hospitals, emphasizing quality, safety, and continuous improvement in hospital settings.
Promoted by the Directorate-General of Health's Program for Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Resistance, in collaboration with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the project is part of the National Patient Safety Plan 2021-2026.
Representatives from SESARAM, including Márcia Gomes, President of the Board, along with Filipa Vicente and Paula Goes Ferreira from the Local PPCIRA Unit, attended the ceremony. Professionals from Intensive Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Orthopedics also participated, underscoring SESARAM's commitment to infection prevention and patient safety.
The commemorative session brought together healthcare professionals and experts from various institutions, providing a platform for sharing experiences, presenting results, and consolidating strategies to ensure the sustainability of improvements achieved.
