A series of unrelated but concerning incidents unfolded in Madeira, involving assaults and accidents, keeping emergency services busy.

In a series of unrelated incidents, emergency services in Madeira were kept busy as several unfortunate events unfolded over a few days, highlighting a need for heightened public awareness and safety measures.

Assaults in Funchal

The Funchal Fire Brigade responded to multiple calls regarding assaults in the city. On February 17, around 5:00 AM, a young man, aged 18, was assaulted on Avenida Sá Carneiro. He was promptly attended to and transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for further care. This incident was shortly followed by another assault on February 18 at 11:15 PM involving a 32-year-old foreign national who was attacked in a commercial establishment on Rua Latino Coelho. He too received immediate medical attention and was taken to the same hospital.

Accidents and Emergencies

In a separate incident on February 16, emergency teams, including the EMIR and Funchal Fire Brigade, were dispatched to Beco do Lume. A 57-year-old man suffered a severe arm injury from a grinder accident. He was swiftly transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital after the incident was reported at 3:30 PM.

In another early morning call on February 17, a man under the influence of 'bloom', a type of drug, claimed to have been hit by a car on Estrada Vitória in Câmara de Lobos. Despite his assertions, he refused transport to the hospital after alleging that a vehicle had run over his foot.

"These incidents underscore the importance of community vigilance and timely response by emergency services," said a local safety officer.

Madeira's emergency services have been praised for their prompt and professional response to these incidents, ensuring that those affected received the necessary care. However, the frequency of such events raises concerns and calls for increased public safety measures and awareness.
