Traffic Accident Involving Young Motorist
On January 11, 2026, a 19-year-old was injured in a traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a car on Estrada Comandante Camacho de Freitas in Fundoa. The young man suffered spinal pain and was promptly immobilized and transported to Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça by the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses.
Fatal Cardiac Arrests Raise Alarm
The same day, the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses were called to respond to two separate cases of cardiac arrest. A 64-year-old man in an institution in Funchal and a 72-year-old man in Boa Nova both succumbed to cardiac arrests despite resuscitation efforts by emergency services.
Assaults on Residents and Tourists
Safety concerns extend beyond health emergencies. In the early hours of January 11, a tourist in his 40s was assaulted and robbed near a hotel in Funchal, leading to facial injuries. He was treated at Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça.
Additionally, a 62-year-old woman was attacked at a local amusement park near the Funchal circus, suffering a head injury. She too was attended to by emergency services and taken to the hospital.
