On January 19, 2026, emergency services were called to Rua Conselheiro José Ribeiro da Cunha in Machico, where a woman suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite efforts from the Municipal Firefighters of Machico and the EMIR medical team, the woman could not be saved.
Tourist Injured in Levada do Norte Fall
In another incident, a 77-year-old English tourist fell 10 meters while hiking on the Levada do Norte in Câmara de Lobos. The woman, part of a tourist group, sustained a deep head cut and injuries to her leg and cervical area. She was rescued and taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
Assault in Funchal
On the evening of January 18, a foreign tourist in her 60s reported being assaulted and robbed on Rua Bela Santiago in Funchal. Although offered medical assistance, she declined to be taken to the hospital.
