On January 2, 2026, Madeira Island witnessed a string of unsettling incidents that required urgent attention from local emergency services. The day began with three significant landslides and three fallen trees along the Estrada do Curral dos Romeiros in Funchal. Additionally, a wall collapsed onto a walkway in São Gonçalo, prompting immediate action to clear paths for residents.
In a separate incident, a woman in her 50s tragically passed away following a cardiac arrest at São João, also in Funchal. Despite rapid intervention by the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters and the EMIR, the woman could not be revived. The local police, PSP, were also present at the scene.
Adding to the day's challenges, a car overturned near the Ponte dos Frades on the rapid transit route between Funchal and Câmara de Lobos. Fortunately, the driver escaped unscathed, and emergency services, including 13 personnel and five vehicles, responded promptly to the accident.
