On January 19, 2026, Madeira Island experienced a series of alarming incidents, affecting both locals and tourists alike. The day was marked by a car accident in Câmara de Lobos, a tragic cardiac arrest in Machico, and a severe injury of a tourist at Levada do Norte.

Car Accident in Câmara de Lobos

In Câmara de Lobos, a driver lost control of his vehicle on Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco, crashing into a parked car. The vehicle overturned, yet the driver managed to exit the car on his own, sustaining only minor injuries. He was subsequently treated and transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça by the local fire brigade.

Tragic Cardiac Arrest in Machico

Earlier in the day, emergency services were called to Rua Conselheiro José Ribeiro da Cunha, where a woman suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite efforts by the Machico municipal firefighters and the EMIR team to resuscitate her, the attempts were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead.

Tourist's Fall at Levada do Norte

Meanwhile, in the picturesque setting of Levada do Norte, a 77-year-old English tourist fell 10 meters while hiking. She was part of a group, accompanied by her husband, when the incident occurred in the remote area of Foro, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Rescuers found her with a severe head injury, leg pain, and neck complaints. She was rescued by a team of five firefighters and taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.

These incidents underscore the importance of safety and emergency preparedness in Madeira, a popular tourist destination known for its scenic landscapes and hiking trails.
