Santa Cruz, Madeira, has approved a €2 million investment to reduce water distribution losses, focusing on key areas in the region.

In a significant move to enhance the water distribution infrastructure, the Santa Cruz Municipal Council in Madeira has sanctioned an investment of approximately €2 million. The decision, adopted during a council meeting on January 22, 2026, aims to address the critical issue of water loss in the region's potable water network.

The interventions will specifically target the subsystems of Igreja in Camacha and Barreiros in Caniço. Both areas have been identified as key points where water loss is most prevalent. The project will be co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), highlighting the importance of sustainable resource management in Madeira.

Water distribution efficiency is a top priority for the Santa Cruz Municipality, as it is crucial for both residents and the thriving tourism sector on the island. The investment underscores the local government's commitment to improving public services and infrastructure, ensuring a reliable water supply for all.

The council's decision was unanimous, with support from both the JPP and the coalition 'Mais Santa Cruz'. This consensus reflects a shared understanding of the necessity to mitigate water losses and enhance the municipality's resource management capabilities.

In addition to the water infrastructure project, the council has also decided to maintain existing rent levels for municipal and agricultural markets in the region. This measure aims to support local businesses and farmers facing economic challenges, further demonstrating the council's commitment to sustaining the local economy.
