Santa Cruz has announced a significant investment of €2 million to address water distribution inefficiencies, enhancing sustainability for residents and tourists alike.

The Municipal Council of Santa Cruz has approved a €2 million investment aimed at reducing water losses in the local distribution network. This move, announced on January 22, 2026, will focus on improving infrastructure in the subsystems of Igreja, Camacha, and Barreiros, Caniço.

The project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and underscores the municipality's commitment to improving resource efficiency and service quality. Water distribution is a critical service in Santa Cruz, and these improvements are designed to decrease wastage and enhance sustainability.

Santa Cruz is not only focusing on water systems but also supporting local commerce. The council has decided to maintain rental prices at municipal and agricultural markets to ease the financial burden on local traders, who have reported low incomes. The Mercadinho da Camacha and the Agricultural Market of Santo da Serra will see these measures as compensatory, particularly amid ongoing renovations.

All initiatives received unanimous support from the council members, including the JPP and the Mais Santa Cruz Coalition. This collaboration highlights the shared goal of sustainable development and community support in the region.
