Sérgio Gonçalves met with UGT representatives to discuss the European Commission's proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework, focusing on its impact on Madeira.

On May 5, 2026, Sérgio Gonçalves, a Member of the European Parliament, held a crucial meeting with representatives from UGT to address the European Commission's proposal for the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). This framework will dictate the EU's budget priorities for the next seven years, affecting various regions, including the outermost regions like Madeira.

UGT expressed significant concerns regarding the potential changes in the budget allocation, which might overlook the unique needs of the outermost regions such as Madeira and the Azores. The union highlighted the risk of increased centralization of European policies, which could marginalize these regions.

During the meeting, Gonçalves assured that the European Parliament, which recently approved an interim report on the MFF, is committed to safeguarding the interests of these regions. Programs like POSEI, which support agricultural sectors in outermost regions, were emphasized as crucial, with calls for increased financial support and decentralized management of EU funds.

Gonçalves, responsible for a report on the future Strategy for the Outermost Regions, reiterated that the European policies must address the persistent challenges faced by these areas, such as insularity and higher logistical costs. The UGT also pointed out the longstanding issue of insufficient EU funds for capacity building and support for trade unions in Madeira.

This dialogue underscores the importance of tailored European financial strategies that can adequately support Madeira's socio-economic landscape, ensuring that these regions are not left behind in broader EU policy developments.
