During the discussions, UGT expressed concerns that the future European budget might not ensure tools tailored to the unique needs of the Outermost Regions, such as Madeira. The union representatives warned against the centralization of European policies, which could neglect the distinct realities of these territories.
Sérgio Gonçalves emphasized the importance of maintaining programs like POSEI, which supports agricultural production in the Outermost Regions. He stressed the need for increased funding and cautioned against centralizing the management of European funds, which could disadvantage regions like Madeira due to their insular nature and associated higher costs.
Furthermore, Gonçalves, who is responsible for a European Parliament report on the future strategy for the Outermost Regions, assured that the concerns of social partners, including those highlighted by UGT, would be addressed. He acknowledged the need for specific European policies to tackle the permanent challenges faced by these regions.
UGT also pointed out a long-standing issue: the lack of EU funds dedicated to the capacity building and functioning of trade union organizations in the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores, which is not as prevalent in mainland Portugal.
