Câmara de Lobos faces ongoing public transport issues due to road closures, while the community prepares for the upcoming Carnival parade on February 15.

Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque town on Madeira Island, is currently grappling with significant public transport disruptions, affecting both residents and tourists. The issues stem from the closure of a critical section of the Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco, a major thoroughfare in the area.

The closure, which has been in place since December 2025, was necessitated by the collapse of a retaining wall due to nearby construction activities. This has forced the local bus operator, Siga-Rodoeste, to reroute services, leading to delays and inconvenience for commuters.

The Socialist Party (PS) representatives, Carlos Gonçalves and Elizabeth Gomes, have publicly demanded swift action from the local council to address the issue. They propose temporary solutions like relocating bus stops to mitigate the impact on daily commuters.

Despite these challenges, the community remains optimistic as it gears up for the annual Carnival parade. Scheduled for February 15, the parade will feature vibrant costumes and floats, with prizes for the best dressed participants. This event is a highlight for both locals and visitors, promising a lively atmosphere in the streets of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos.

The Carnival, known for its festive spirit, is expected to draw crowds from across the island, offering a temporary respite from the transport woes. Many groups participating in this parade will also join the larger event in Funchal, further showcasing Madeira's rich cultural tapestry.

Local authorities are under pressure to resolve the transport issues swiftly, as the upcoming festivities will test the resilience of the current infrastructure. The situation has sparked a broader discussion on the need for sustainable transport solutions in Madeira's growing urban areas.
