Public Transport Disruptions in Câmara de Lobos Prompt Socialists to Demand Action
Madeira GuideSocialist representatives in Câmara de Lobos urge quick resolution of ongoing public transport disruptions affecting residents and tourists alike. The delays stem from road closures due to construction work.
The Socialist Party (PS) representatives in Câmara de Lobos, Carlos Gonçalves and Elizabeth Gomes, are calling for immediate action to resolve public transport disruptions in the area. These issues have arisen due to the closure of Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco, a critical route for buses operated by Siga-Rodoeste. The road has been closed since December 2025 following a landslide linked to construction activities.
The closure near 'Padaria Panidoce' has forced buses to take a longer detour, causing significant delays and inconvenience for both residents and tourists relying on public transport. The socialists have publicly questioned the local government's inaction in addressing this critical infrastructure issue.
The PS has proposed a temporary solution by relocating the taxi stand to its previous location near the church and establishing a provisional bus stop where the current taxi stand is located. This solution was successfully implemented during local festivals, yet the municipal authorities have not acted on it.
The road closure resulted from a landslide caused by earth movements during construction, which made the route unsafe. The prolonged closure has led to a 'redundant and inefficient' bus route between the Civic Center and the Calvário, leading to passenger frustration.
The Socialist representatives' demands highlight a pressing need for swift municipal action to restore efficient public transport services and alleviate ongoing disruptions.
