Residents and tourists in Câmara de Lobos face public transport disruptions as the Carnival approaches, highlighting the urgent need for road repairs and efficient transport solutions.

As the vibrant Carnival season approaches, residents and tourists in Câmara de Lobos, Madeira, are facing significant challenges with public transportation. The Socialist Party (PS) has publicly demanded swift action to resolve the ongoing disruptions to bus services on Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco, a critical route in the area.

The road has been closed since December 2025 due to a collapse caused by construction-related earth movements, severely impacting the Siga-Rodoeste bus service. This closure has forced buses to undertake inefficient detours, causing delays and discomfort to passengers. Despite suggestions for temporary solutions, such as relocating the taxi stand and installing a provisional bus stop, no action has been taken by the local authorities.

Adding to the urgency, the Carnival parade is scheduled for February 15, drawing large crowds and increasing demand for public transport. The parade, known for its colorful costumes and vibrant atmosphere, is a highlight for both locals and tourists. Participants in the Estreito parade often join the larger Trapalhão parade in Funchal, further amplifying the need for efficient transport solutions.

The PS representatives, Carlos Gonçalves and Elizabeth Gomes, have criticized the municipal government's inaction and are pushing for immediate measures to alleviate the transport issues. They propose utilizing existing logistical strategies successfully used during local festivals to address the current transport challenges.

This situation underscores the broader infrastructure challenges faced by Madeira, especially in accommodating its growing tourism sector. Efficient and reliable public transport is crucial not only for residents but also for maintaining Madeira's reputation as a top tourist destination.
