PS Pushes for Higher Payments to Banana Producers in Madeira

The Socialist Party (PS) in Madeira has recently called upon the Regional Government to increase the payments made to local banana producers. This demand emerges amidst the backdrop of the substantial profits generated by GESBA, the entity responsible for the commercialization of bananas on the island.

During a visit to the Regional Banana Showcase in Madalena do Mar, Célia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-Madeira, emphasized the indispensable role that banana producers play in the regional economy. According to Pessegueiro, the current financial arrangements fall short, with GESBA generating annual revenues of around 30 million euros, of which only 15 million are distributed to the producers.

Pessegueiro's statements underscore a broader economic concern, as the banana industry represents a crucial segment of Madeira's agricultural sector.
