The Socialist Party demands a mobility subsidy model that directly benefits Madeirans, moving away from the current reimbursement system.

In a bid to reform the current mobility subsidy system, the Socialist Party (PS) of Madeira has called for significant changes to ensure the subsidy truly benefits the residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The proposal seeks to eliminate the bureaucratic hurdles and inefficiencies of the current reimbursement model.

During a parliamentary session, Emanuel Câmara and Carlos Pereira, PS deputies to the National Assembly, pushed for a restructuring of the subsidy process. They emphasized the need for a model that involves direct payment of flight tariffs at the point of purchase, thus removing the cumbersome process of post-purchase reimbursements.

The current system, which requires passengers to claim refunds after travel, has been criticized for being overly complicated and inaccessible. PS argues for a system akin to those in Spain, France, and Italy where insular territories benefit from direct discounts or fixed tariffs, making air travel more affordable and straightforward for residents.

Despite initial resistance from airlines such as TAP, easyJet, and SATA, the PS deputies underscored the viability of their proposal with examples of successful implementations in other European regions. They highlighted the importance of mobility and territorial cohesion as fundamental rights for Madeirans.

Câmara and Pereira also expressed disappointment with the opposing PSD party, which has shown hesitation and new reservations about the proposed changes. They reiterated their commitment to advocating for Madeiran residents' rights, emphasizing that their stance is unwavering and focused on practical, fair solutions.

The PS's push for reform is part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of life for Madeira's residents, ensuring they have equitable access to transportation and can participate fully in the social and economic life of the region.
