The Portuguese Parliament has approved new legislation altering the air mobility subsidy, affecting travel between Madeira, the Azores, and mainland Portugal.

In a significant development for residents and tourists of Madeira and the Azores, the Portuguese Parliament has approved changes to the air mobility subsidy. These amendments, which passed on February 18, 2026, aim to simplify access to financial support for air travel between these islands and mainland Portugal.

The legislative changes were driven by proposals from the regional assemblies of Madeira and the Azores, as well as a project from the Chega party. The core objective is to remove the requirement for travelers to have no outstanding financial obligations to the state in order to qualify for the subsidy.

The new model, crafted by the government of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, received opposition from the PSD and CDS parties. However, it garnered support from social-democratic deputies elected from the islands, highlighting the regional backing for these reforms.

These changes are particularly important for the economic and social connectivity of Madeira and the Azores with mainland Portugal. By easing the conditions for receiving the subsidy, the amendments are expected to enhance accessibility and affordability of air travel, benefitting both local residents and tourists.

This decision marks a pivotal shift in transportation policy, reflecting the ongoing discussions about regional mobility and the economic integration of Portugal's autonomous regions.
