Porto Santo Native PSP Officer Accused of Torture and Rape in Lisbon
Madeira GuideA PSP officer from Porto Santo is accused of torture and rape, targeting vulnerable groups in Lisbon, in a case that has shocked Madeira's community.
In a disturbing case that has sent ripples through the Madeira community, a Police of Public Security (PSP) officer from Porto Santo has been accused of committing acts of torture and rape. This officer, along with a colleague, allegedly targeted vulnerable groups, including drug addicts, homeless individuals, and undocumented immigrants in Lisbon.
The two officers, aged 21 and 24, were stationed at the Rato police station in Lisbon and were detained last July following an investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office. The accusations include severe physical abuse, such as beatings with fists, slaps, and gun butts, and even sexual violence using objects like batons and broomsticks.
The case has particularly shocked residents and tourists in Madeira, as one of the accused, Guilherme Leme, is a native of Porto Santo. Both officers reportedly filmed and photographed their assaults, sharing the footage in WhatsApp groups with other officers.
The PSP has formally expressed regret over the officers' behaviors, emphasizing the disgrace such actions bring to the force. The accused officers are currently in preventive detention as legal proceedings continue.
This incident raises significant concerns about police conduct and accountability, especially given the severity of the charges and the vulnerability of the victims involved. The community on Madeira, known for its peaceful environment, has been particularly affected by the news.
