The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has made a compelling case for enhancing urban mobility in Funchal by advocating for free public transportation. This initiative aims to mitigate the escalating traffic congestion that plagues the city, particularly during peak hours on weekdays.
During a recent meeting organized by the PCP's Funchal leadership, party members discussed the pressing urban mobility issues affecting residents' daily lives. They highlighted the lack of investment in public transport and the absence of a coherent mobility strategy from the current municipal administration as key contributors to Funchal's traffic woes.
Proposed Solutions
To alleviate the city's traffic problems, the PCP has put forward several immediate solutions. These include establishing free parking facilities on the outskirts of the city, complemented by an efficient network of mini-buses to transport commuters swiftly to the city center. Additionally, the party suggests implementing a municipal school transport system to ensure safe and convenient travel for children, thereby reducing traffic congestion around schools during peak times.
The PCP has also criticized the recent increase in public transport fares, arguing that such hikes are unjustified. They emphasize that while many European cities and Portuguese municipalities are moving towards free public transport, Funchal has seen a fare increase of €0.50, which is contrary to this trend.
"Funchalenses deserve the same public transport benefits as other Portuguese citizens. We are committed to fighting for reduced parking fees and a robust public transport network."
