The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has proposed several measures to address the worsening traffic conditions in Funchal, Madeira's capital. During a meeting with local party members, the PCP emphasized the urgent need for free public transport to alleviate congestion, particularly during peak hours.
Funchal's traffic has become a significant issue, with the city's infrastructure struggling to cope with the increasing number of vehicles. The PCP criticized the current municipal administration for inadequate investment in public transport and a lack of a strategic mobility plan.
The party suggests creating free peripheral parking areas connected to the city center by an efficient mini-bus network. This measure aims to reduce the number of cars entering the city center, thus easing congestion.
Additionally, the PCP proposes the introduction of a municipal school transport system to ensure safe and convenient travel for children, thereby reducing traffic during school hours.
"Funchal's residents should not be treated as second-class citizens. Public transport should be free, aligning with trends in mainland Portugal and Europe," the PCP stated during the meeting.
The party also expressed dissatisfaction with recent fare increases for public transport passes, highlighting that such policies contradict broader European trends towards free public transport.
By advocating for these changes, the PCP aims to enhance urban mobility for both residents and tourists, ensuring a more sustainable and accessible city environment.
