A fireworks mishap on New Year's Eve led to a fire in an apartment in Funchal, Madeira, causing damage but no injuries. Firefighters quickly responded to the scene.

On New Year's Eve, a firework accidentally ignited a fire in an apartment on the seventh floor of the Monumental Palace Apartments on Rua Velha da Ajuda, Funchal, Madeira. The incident occurred shortly after 8 PM, as residents prepared to celebrate the holiday.

The fire started on the apartment's balcony, where various materials, including a sofa, caught fire. The apartment's occupants attempted to extinguish the flames using buckets of water before the arrival of the fire brigade.

The Funchal Fire Department dispatched 13 personnel and four vehicles to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters quickly brought the situation under control and initiated ventilation procedures to clear the smoke from the building.

This incident highlights the potential dangers associated with fireworks, especially in densely populated areas like Funchal, where New Year's celebrations are particularly vibrant and widespread.

Madeira residents and tourists are well-accustomed to the island's spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks display, which is among the largest in the world. The event attracts thousands of visitors each year, contributing significantly to the local economy.

In addition to this incident, the Funchal Fire Department responded to several other emergencies on December 31, including a motorcycle accident involving a 17-year-old and a fire caused by an electrical fault in São Martinho.
