New Regulations for Funchal Port to Address Transportation Disputes
Madeira GuideA new set of regulations for Funchal Port is expected to be proposed by the end of February, aiming to resolve ongoing transportation disputes and address concerns of unfair competition.
The Regional Secretariat for Economy, along with local taxi operators, tourism companies, and cruise ship agents, resumed negotiations to address the ongoing disputes at Funchal Port. These talks have been sparked by claims of unfair competition by the taxi association TáxisRAM.
TáxisRAM, a prominent taxi association in Madeira, has previously threatened protests over what it perceives as unfair competition at the port. The association has now agreed to halt any demonstrations and wait for a new regulatory proposal, which is expected by the end of February.
The new regulations aim to harmonize the interests of all parties involved, including taxi operators, tour operators, and cruise lines. The proposal will be developed by a dedicated working group, which includes representatives from various sectors affected by the current rules.
Paula Cabaço, President of the Administration of Ports of Madeira (APRAM), emphasized the importance of considering the concerns of TáxisRAM and ensuring fair access to the port for all operators. "We understand there are rules to follow, but it is crucial to ensure that the port remains one of the best in service quality," stated Cabaço.
Operators from AITRAM, another local taxi association, have expressed a willingness to see improvements in the regulations, provided they benefit all stakeholders. This sentiment was echoed by representatives from BC Tours Portugal and Ibercruises, who highlighted the potential reputational damage to Madeira if disputes are not amicably resolved.
The proposed regulatory changes are seen as essential for maintaining the port's reputation and ensuring smooth operations. As negotiations progress, all parties remain committed to finding a balanced solution that supports both economic interests and service quality.
