The Government of Madeira is set to present a new regulatory proposal for Funchal Port by the end of February, addressing concerns of unfair competition raised by the TáxisRAM association.

In a move aimed at resolving ongoing disputes among transport operators at Funchal Port, the Regional Secretariat of Economy in Madeira is preparing to introduce a new regulatory framework by the end of February. This decision comes after negotiations involving the TáxisRAM association, cruise operators, and other stakeholders.

The TáxisRAM association, which represents local taxi drivers, has expressed grievances over what it perceives as unfair competition at the port. They have temporarily suspended protests to allow for the development of new regulations expected to balance the interests of all parties involved.

Key figures in these discussions include the Secretary of Regional Economy and Paula Cabaço, President of APRAM (Administration of the Ports of Madeira). The talks are focused on creating a set of guidelines that ensure fair access to the port for all transport operators, including taxis, tour operators, and cruise services.

Stakeholders' Perspectives

Paulo Pereira, President of TáxisRAM, emphasized the association's willingness to collaborate with the authorities, stating they will wait for the new regulations before deciding on further actions. He underscored the importance of maintaining their current operations while ensuring fair competition.

Representatives from the AITRAM (Industrial Taxi Association of Madeira) have also participated in these discussions, expressing a generally positive outlook. While they see no immediate need for change, they support the idea of improvements that benefit all parties involved.

Liliana Vieira, representing BC Tours Portugal and Ibercruises, stressed the importance of maintaining Madeira's positive image among cruise operators. She highlighted the exemplary service standards at Funchal Port and urged for sensible rule enforcement.

Looking Ahead

The outcome of these discussions is crucial for maintaining harmony among the various stakeholders at Funchal Port. With the regulatory proposal expected soon, all eyes are on how it will address the concerns of local taxi operators while preserving the interests of other transport services.
