The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a new warning for strong maritime agitation around Madeira Island. This alert, which comes after the previous yellow warning was lifted, now includes the southern coast of Madeira in addition to the northern coast and Porto Santo.
According to IPMA, the warning will be in effect from 18:00 on Friday, January 16, until 07:00 on Saturday, January 17. During this period, waves are expected to reach heights of 4 to 5 meters from the northwest along the northern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo, while the western part of the southern coast will experience waves of 4 to 4.5 meters from the west/northwest.
Despite the cancellation of the previous warning, the Funchal Port Authority advises boat owners and operators to maintain caution and ensure their vessels are seaworthy. They stress the importance of suitable conditions for navigation and safety, particularly in protective breakwaters.
The dynamic weather conditions around Madeira at this time of year are not unusual, and both residents and tourists are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and heed warnings from local authorities. Such precautions are essential to ensure safety in maritime activities and along coastal areas.
