The new leadership team for the ANAFRE Regional Delegation in Madeira is set to take office on Wednesday, April 8, marking a significant event for local governance.

The new leadership team for the Delegation of the National Association of Parishes (ANAFRE) in Madeira will take office this Wednesday, April 8, at 5:00 PM. The ceremony will be held at the John dos Passos Cultural Center in Ponta do Sol, a picturesque village known for its historic and cultural significance.

The team, led by João Norberto Pita, President of the Parish Council of Canhas, will serve from 2026 to 2029. This event is noteworthy as it involves key figures in local governance, including the Regional Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, and the newly appointed President of ANAFRE's Board of Directors, Francisco Brito, who also serves as the President of the Parish Council of the historic center of Évora.

The election, held on March 27, saw only one list presented. João Norberto Pita was elected as the new coordinator, with Milton Teixeira and Paulo Marques Mendes as vice-coordinators. Other team members include Tiago Rodrigues, Alexandre Figueira, Xavier Castro, and Paulo Sérgio Rodrigues as members, with a supporting team of alternates comprising Marsílio Aguiar, Albertina Ferreira, Liseta Nascimento, and others.

Significance for Madeira

The installation of this new leadership is a crucial step for the ANAFRE Regional Delegation, as it aims to strengthen local governance and foster collaboration among Madeira’s parishes. The presence of high-profile attendees underscores the importance of this event in the regional political landscape.

Background on ANAFRE

ANAFRE, the National Association of Parishes, is instrumental in representing the interests of parish councils across Portugal. It plays a vital role in facilitating dialogue between local authorities and the national government, ensuring that the unique needs of areas like Madeira are addressed.

The John dos Passos Cultural Center, where the ceremony will take place, is named after the American writer John dos Passos, who had family ties to Madeira. This venue is a symbol of the cultural and historical depth of the region, making it a fitting choice for such a significant event.
