The regional government announces plans for a new cable car system connecting the city center to Monte, improving accessibility for tourists and residents alike.

The Regional Government of Madeira has unveiled ambitious plans for a new cable car system that will revolutionize transportation between Funchal's city center and the historic Monte neighborhood. This exciting development promises to enhance accessibility for both tourists and local residents while offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

A Modern Solution to an Age-Old Challenge

Monte, perched 550 meters above sea level, has long been one of Madeira's most popular destinations. The existing cable car, operated by Teleférico do Funchal, has served visitors well since 2000, but the new system aims to complement it by providing an alternative route and increased capacity.

The proposed cable car will feature state-of-the-art cabins with panoramic windows, allowing passengers to enjoy 360-degree views of Funchal's terracotta rooftops, the surrounding mountains, and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Each cabin will accommodate up to 8 passengers and will be fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Environmental Considerations

In keeping with Madeira's commitment to sustainable tourism, the new cable car system will be powered entirely by renewable energy. Solar panels installed at both stations will generate electricity, while the system's regenerative braking technology will recover energy during descent.

This project represents our vision for sustainable urban mobility. We're not just building a cable car; we're creating an eco-friendly transport solution for the future.

— Regional Transport Secretary

Timeline and Investment

Construction is expected to begin in early 2025, with the system becoming operational by late 2026. The project represents an investment of approximately €45 million, funded through a combination of regional funds and European Union development grants.

Local businesses in both Funchal and Monte have expressed enthusiasm for the project, anticipating increased visitor numbers and economic benefits for the entire region.
