The Portuguese Navy is set to host a series of events in Madeira from May 16 to 24, 2026, as part of the Navy Day celebrations. This event underscores the historical and close relationship between the Navy and the Madeiran community.
Throughout this period, locals and visitors alike will have the chance to explore naval ships and lighthouses, participate in sailing baptisms, and try out various nautical sports. These activities are open to the public and aim to bring the community closer to the maritime world.
Event Highlights
- Visit the NRP Zaire at Cais n.º 4, Port of Funchal, from May 16 to 20 (09:30 – 11:30 and 14:00 – 17:00).
- Participate in the Navy Day Sailing Regatta – Álvaro Lopes Trophy at Funchal Bay on May 17 at 14:00.
- Tour the Ponta do Pargo and São Jorge lighthouses from May 20 to 24 (14:00 – 17:00).
- Join the Open Day with the Funchal Naval Club for nautical activities and sea baptisms on May 23 at Cais de São Lázaro (10:00 – 12:30).
- End the month with the Maritime Canoeing Commemorative Regatta on May 30 and 31, starting at the Port of Funchal.
These initiatives are organized by the Portuguese Navy and the National Maritime Authority to not only showcase their mission and operations but also to reinforce their longstanding connection with the Madeira community. This year's main Navy Day celebrations will take place in Setúbal from May 20 to 24.
