A series of traffic incidents in Madeira, including a car fire in Serra de Água and a rollover near the hospital, raise safety concerns for both residents and tourists.

Madeira Island, a renowned tourist destination, experienced a series of traffic incidents that have raised safety concerns among residents and visitors alike. These incidents occurred on January 31, 2026, and involved both fires and accidents in different locations across the island.

Car Fire in Serra de Água

In the late afternoon, a vehicle caught fire on the expressway near Serra de Água, just before the Encumeada tunnel. The incident prompted a rapid response from the Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol Volunteer Firefighters, who dispatched two vehicles and seven firefighters to the scene. Fortunately, the flames were already extinguished upon their arrival. The fire had been reported at 18:30.

Rollover Near Funchal Hospital

Earlier that morning, at around 5:30, a car rolled over at the roundabout near the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal. The vehicle's driver, a man in his 30s, managed to extricate himself from the car and was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment. The Funchal Firefighters were quick to respond, deploying 11 personnel and three vehicles to manage the situation.

Crash and Fire on Estrada do Lazareto

In another incident on the same day, a car lost control on Estrada do Lazareto, crashing into a wall and catching fire. The driver sustained a head injury but was treated promptly by the Madeira Volunteer Firefighters, who arrived with two vehicles and ten firefighters.

These incidents underscore the importance of road safety on the island, particularly in areas frequented by tourists. Traffic regulations and road conditions continue to be a focal point for local authorities aiming to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
