Madeira's emergency services faced a challenging day as a series of traffic incidents unfolded across the island. The first incident occurred on the Via Expresso in Serra de Água, where a car caught fire around 6:30 PM. Fortunately, the flames were extinguished by the time the firefighters from Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol arrived at the scene with two vehicles and seven personnel.
Earlier in the day, another accident happened at the roundabout near the hospital in Funchal. At approximately 5:30 AM, a car overturned, but the driver, in his 30s, managed to escape without serious injuries. He was taken to Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça for a precautionary check-up. The response team consisted of 11 firefighters with three vehicles.
Additionally, an accident on Estrada do Lazareto resulted in a vehicle veering off the road, hitting a wall, and catching fire. The driver sustained a head injury and was assisted by 10 firefighters who arrived with two vehicles.
These incidents underline the critical role of Madeira's emergency services and the ongoing challenges related to road safety on the island, especially in areas with complex road networks like tunnels and roundabouts.
