Recent days have seen several incidents on Madeira's highways, including a car fire and multiple accidents, affecting holiday traffic. Authorities are urging caution.

As Madeira Island welcomes an influx of tourists and locals traveling during the holiday season, the region's highways have witnessed a series of incidents, raising concerns about road safety.

On December 25th, an accident occurred on the expressway near Santa Cruz, shortly before the first exit towards Santa Cruz in the Machico-Funchal direction. The Public Security Police (PSP) and Vialitoral, the road management company, were present at the scene to manage traffic and investigate the incident.

Just a day earlier, on December 24th, another alarming event took place when a car caught fire on the same expressway under the Madeira Airport runway, again in the Machico-Funchal direction. The Santa Cruz Fire Brigade was promptly dispatched to extinguish the blaze.

Adding to the series of unfortunate events, on December 23rd, an accident was reported on the expressway in Funchal, specifically in the São Martinho area, heading towards Câmara de Lobos. This series of incidents highlights the challenges faced by the region's infrastructure during peak travel times.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise heightened caution during their travels, emphasizing the importance of road safety, particularly during the busy holiday season. Travelers are advised to stay informed on road conditions and adhere to safety protocols to ensure a smooth and safe journey.

Madeira's expressways, a vital part of the island's transportation network, play a crucial role in linking major towns and tourist destinations, making their safety and functionality a top priority for both residents and visitors.
