A series of incidents on January 31, 2026, kept Madeira's firefighters engaged across Funchal, highlighting their critical role in community safety.

Elderly Woman Rescued After Two Days of Isolation

In a residential area on Rua Cidade do Cabo, Funchal, the Madeira Volunteer Firefighters conducted a rescue operation for a 78-year-old woman who had not been seen for two days. Concerned neighbors alerted the authorities, leading to a forced entry into her home with the support of the Public Security Police (PSP). The woman, found in distress after a fall, was promptly taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for medical care.

Early Morning Accidents Stir Funchal

The Funchal Fire Brigade was called to multiple vehicle accidents early in the morning. At 5:30 AM, a car overturned at the roundabout near the hospital. The driver, in his 30s, managed to escape with minor injuries and was also transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. The incident involved 11 firefighters and three emergency vehicles.

Shortly after, at 6:20 AM, the brigade responded to an accident on Avenida Sá Carneiro where a 39-year-old pedestrian was hit by a vehicle. The man sustained abrasions and was taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Car Fire on Estrada do Lazareto

In another significant incident, a car crash led to a fire on Estrada do Lazareto. The vehicle collided with a wall and caught fire, resulting in a head injury for the driver. This emergency saw the deployment of 10 firefighters and two vehicles to contain the fire and provide first aid.

These events underscore the vital operations of Madeira's firefighting teams, showcasing their readiness and crucial role in managing emergencies efficiently.
