Funchal faced a series of emergencies, including landslides, a fatal cardiac arrest, and a car overturn, prompting swift response from local emergency services.

On January 2, 2026, Funchal, the capital of Madeira Island, experienced a series of incidents that required immediate attention from local emergency services. These incidents, which occurred in different parts of the city, highlighted the readiness and responsiveness of the city's emergency teams.

Landslides and Structural Damage

The Madeira Volunteer Firefighters were called to address three landslides and three fallen trees along the Estrada do Curral dos Romeiros. Additionally, a wall collapsed onto a path at the Escadinhas do Serrado in São Gonçalo, necessitating the creation of a temporary access route for residents. These incidents underscore the vulnerability of Madeira's infrastructure to natural events, particularly during the rainy season.

Tragic Cardiac Arrest Incident

In another part of Funchal, emergency services, including the Madeira Volunteer Firefighters and the Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR), responded to a cardiac arrest incident involving a woman in her 50s. The incident occurred in São João, where despite the efforts of the emergency teams, the woman sadly passed away. The local police were also involved in managing the situation.

Car Overturn on Rapid Road

Later that evening, the fire brigade from Câmara de Lobos was dispatched to another emergency: a car had overturned on the rapid road near Ponte dos Frades. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed and managed to exit the vehicle without assistance. The response involved 13 personnel and five emergency vehicles, demonstrating the efficiency and coordination of Madeira's rescue services.

These events are a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Madeira in terms of infrastructure and public safety. The island's emergency response teams continue to play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of such incidents, ensuring the safety and security of both residents and visitors.
